Iowa City Public Schools hold inaugural Candace Carmichael Elementary School Art Exhibit

An exhibit of more than 150 pieces of art created by Iowa City public school students in kindergarten through sixth grade will be displayed from Jan. 7-15 in the second-floor lobby of the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences on the University of Iowa campus. The exhibit honors the late Candace Carmichael, a long-time art educator in the Iowa City Community School District who died in August. Candace was the wife of Greg Carmichael, a professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and associate dean for graduate programs and research in the UI College of Engineering.

The exhibit, with representation from every public elementary school in Iowa City, is open to the public from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences is located on Capitol Street, just west of Old Capitol Town Center. Paid parking is available in the Iowa City Parking Garage adjacent to the Town Center.

A reception is planned from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Seamans Center for student artists, teachers, families, and friends. The reception will include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities, presented by the College of Engineering.

A native Iowan, Candace taught in the Iowa City School District since 1978, first at Southeast and Northwest Junior High schools and various elementary schools, and most recently at Horn and Shimek Schools.
