UI presents Band Extravaganza and Symphony Band concert Nov. 15 and 16

The top bands of the University of Iowa School of Music will take center stage with the annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m . Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Carver Hawkeye Arena, and a free concert by the Symphony Band at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Main Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The Band Extravaganza is a popular showcase for the Johnson County Landmark (JCL) jazz band, the Symphony Band, and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

Under the direction of John Rapson, JCL will perform "Blues Almighty" by Ken Schaphorst; "Catch Me If You Can" by Wil Swindler; Rapson's "Legacy of Lyons, featuring New York saxophonist Dave Pietro as special guest; and Pietro's "Juba." Visit to learn more about Pietra, who has performed and recorded with artists including the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, Paul Anka, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, and Liza Minnelli.

The Symphony Band will play "American Salute" by Morton Gould, "Semper Fidelis" by John Philip Sousa, and the Overture to "The Cowboys" by John Williams.

The extravaganza will culminate with highlights from the 2011 marching season by the Hawkeye Marching Band, directed by Kevin Kastens and featuring Hawkeye Golden Girl Chelsea Russell, drum major Joe Piasecki, and the Iowa Spirit Squads. Herky will be available for photos.

On Nov. 16 the Symphony Band, under the direction of Richard Mark Heidel, assistant conductor Carter Biggers and guest conductor Marc Decker, will perform the "American Salute" by Morton Gould; the Divertimento for Band, Op. 42, by Vincent Persichetti; In evening's stillness…" by Joseph Schwantner; Sinfonia for Winds by Gaetano Donizetti; "Lads of Wamphray" by Percy Aldridge Grainger; and the Overture to "The Cowboys" by John Williams.
