UI Children's Hospital nationally ranked by U.S.News & World Report

University of Iowa Children's Hospital ranks among the top children's hospitals in the country, according to U.S.News & World Report's 2011-2012 edition of "Best Children's Hospitals."

UI Children's Hospital ranked in all 10 specialties, including the areas of orthopedics (24); nephrology (28); pulmonology (29); neonatology (31); cardiology and heart surgery (32); urology (35); gastroenterology (37); cancer (43); neurology and neurosurgery (46); and diabetes and endocrinology (48).

UI Children's Hospital is the only hospital in Iowa to be nationally ranked by U.S.News & World Report for children's care.

"This is a true testament to the quality of care our physicians, nurses and staff provide throughout UI Children's Hospital," said Thomas Scholz, M.D., interim physician-in-chief of UI Children's Hospital and professor and interim head of the UI Department of Pediatrics. "This honor reflects our continuing commitment to our patients and their families to provide the best care possible throughout our specialties."

"We salute UI Children's Hospital," said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. "The goal of the Best Children's Hospitals rankings is to call attention to pediatric centers with the expertise to help the sickest kids, and UI Children's Hospital is one of those centers."

Now in its fifth year, Best Children's Hospitals pulls together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey, completed by the majority of the 177 hospitals asked to participate for the 2011-12 rankings. The survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability and many more pieces of critical information difficult or impossible for those in charge of a child's care to find on their own. The data from the survey is combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging problems.
