Hancher presents vocal groups Take 6 and Calmus March 24 and 25

The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalists Take 6 on March 24 and stunning German quintet Calmus on March 25. The Take 6 performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union while Calmus will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in the West High School Auditorium.

With rich, swinging harmonies that draw from the traditions of doo-wop and gospel music, Take 6 has been collecting Grammys since releasing its self-titled album in 1988. The 2008 album “The Standard” integrates R&B and jazz influences with the group’s sonorous gospel sound and has reaffirmed Take 6’s position as an a cappella powerhouse of the twenty-first century.

Throughout its career, Take 6 has kept good company, collaborating with musical legends Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Don Henley, Ray Charles, Queen Latifah, and Brian McKnight, to name a few. The group has had the honor of performing for four sitting U.S. presidents, and captivated a crowd of 2,300 ardent listeners when Hancher last presented Take 6 in 1991.

Members of the German quintet Calmus exhibit visible joy in making music together and have been cited as “rising stars of the a cappella scene” by renowned German music magazine “Fono Forum” for their impeccable intonation. Winner of the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Calmus hails from Bach’s hometown of Leipzig. Formed in 1999 by five members of the St. Thomas Boy’s Choir, the ensemble’s sound reflects the rich choral tradition of its native city.

Calmus now features Anja Lipfert, whose bright soprano has colored the group’s sound since 2001. The singers refer to themselves as “at home in all styles,” and accentuate their renaissance and baroque repertoire with German romantic music and contemporary compositions.

These performances are supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets for Take 6 are $10-25; college student, $10; senior citizen, $22.50; youth, $10. Tickets for Calmus are $10-35; college student, $10; senior citizen, $31.50; youth, $10. Tickets for both performances are available from the Hancher Box Office.

The Box Office will be closed March 14-March 18, but tickets are available online. Any remaining tickets will be available one hour prior to the performances at both the IMU and West High.
