Brennan named new chief medical officer for UI Health Care

The leadership of University of Iowa Health Care announced today that Theresa Brennan, M.D., has been named chief medical officer (CMO) for UI Health Care effective July 1, pending approval by the Iowa Board of Regents.

"Dr. Brennan is an outstanding clinician with unsurpassed commitment to caring for her patients," said Jean Robillard, M.D., UI vice president for medical affairs. "Her experience makes her ideally qualified to assume this important position."

The CMO provides leadership in all areas of clinical service, oversees system-wide clinical quality and patient safety, and facilitates clinical performance improvement and best practices to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of care.

"As chief medical officer, Dr. Brennan will lead several key initiatives," said Kenneth Kates, associate vice president and CEO, UI Hospitals and Clinics. "I look forward working with her to further improve outcomes and key quality and safety indicators, lower lengths of stay, enhance patient throughput, and improve patient and family satisfaction among inpatients and outpatients."

Brennan joined the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine faculty in 2001. She currently serves as the clinical director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. She is also the Colloton Associate Professor of Clinical Cardiovascular Medicine.

She has held a series of leadership roles, including serving as chief resident and chief cardiology fellow, medical director of the cardiovascular inpatient units, vice chair for clinical programs for the Department of Internal Medicine, and co-medical director of UI Heart and Vascular Center. She actively sees and cares for patients in the outpatient clinic, the cardiac catheterization laboratory and the cardiovascular intensive care unit.

"I have long admired Dr. Brennan's abilities and skills," said Paul Rothman, M.D., dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "She is deeply respected by her peers within UI Health Care and in the health care profession."

Brennan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the UI in 1988 and graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1992. She is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. She is included on the "Best Doctors in America" listing.
