UI College of Pharmacy receives $450,000 for student aid

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy received two donations totaling $450,000 to boost scholarship and service-learning assistance for its students.

Elizabeth Jansen, who graduated from the UI with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1992 and a doctorate of pharmacy degree in 1997, and Michael Jansen designated a $400,000 bequest through the UI Foundation to establish two funds for the College of Pharmacy.

The Elizabeth E. Jansen Scholarship Fund will provide general scholarship support to one or more eligible students in the college each year. The second fund, the Elizabeth E. Jansen Service-Learning Global Health Scholarship Fund, will offer assistance to students in the College of Pharmacy who are participating in service-learning projects with underserved populations and/or global health initiatives. The couple, who live in Lakeway, Texas, also created a bequest to benefit the UI School of Music in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Elizabeth Jansen is a registered pharmacist with Safeway Corp.

In addition, family members of Virgil R. McCutchan, a 1943 graduate of the college who died in 2009, created a scholarship fund in his memory. McCutchan's wife, Patricia J. McCutchan of Temecula, Calif., and daughter, Jayne Hufschmid of London, England, made a $50,000 gift commitment through the UI Foundation to establish the Virgil R. McCutchan Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in good academic standing who also demonstrates financial need. Virgil McCutchan was the longtime owner of Seaside Pharmacy in San Pedro, Calif.
