Final week of UI Summer Music Camps features three free jazz events

The final week of the 2011 University of Iowa Summer Music Camps, for high-school jazz musicians, will feature three free, public events:
--A concert by the jazz faculty at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 27, in the University Capitol Centre (UCC) Recital Hall.
--A concert by the Koplant No jazz progressive jazz electronic rock ensemble, featuring saxophonist Joel VanderHeyden(photo ,left), at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, in the UCC Recital Hall.
--A concert by camp ensembles at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 1, at the Weather Fountain Stage in downtown Iowa City (in case of rain, the concert will be presented in the Riverside Recital Hall).

UI School of Music faculty member Brent Sandy is the coordinator of the jazz camp.

The 59th annual Iowa Summer Music Camps offer students musical training and experience beyond what may available in their home schools, including group instruction, masterclasses, and classroom instruction, as well as a preview of life on a major university campus.

All musicians who have completed the eighth grade or above may apply, with the recommendation of their instrumental-music teacher.

Students enrolled in the jazz camp will attend instrumental masterclasses; study soundpainting, rhythm and jazz theory; and rehearse in small ensembles under faculty supervision.

The School of Music is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
