UI Children's Hospital, Iowa Hawkeyes announce 2011 Kid Captains

Thirteen current and former patients of University of Iowa Children's Hospital will have a special reason to remember this year's Iowa Hawkeye football season. Each of them will serve as a Kid Captain for one of the 2011 Iowa Hawkeye football games.

In its third year, the Kid Captain program is a partnership between UI Children's Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to honor UI Children's Hospital patients and celebrate their inspirational stories. This year's Kid Captains were selected from a field of 222 nominations.

"The Kid Captain program continues to be an exciting way for UI Children's Hospital to highlight the courageous stories of these children and their families. Narrowing the field of nominees to just 13 captains is not an easy task, as each child's story is an example of the strength and determination these children have when facing life-threatening illness and injury," said Thomas Scholz, M.D., interim physician-in-chief of UI Children's Hospital and professor and interim head of the UI Department of Pediatrics.

"I'm sure I can speak for all of our pediatric health care providers when I say 'Congratulations' to these Kid Captains and thank the families for allowing us to share the stories of their incredible children," Scholz said.

A multi-disciplinary committee of clinical care staff and professional staff selected the 2011 Kid Captains.

Children selected as Kid Captains for the 2011 home games are:
-- Isaac Arguello, 10, Davenport
-- Benjamin Wilson, 11, Palatine, Ill.
-- Kali Buchanan, 7, Bondurant
-- Megan Michalski, 17, Cedar Rapids
-- Oliver Palmer, 10, Waterloo
-- Ryan DeMott, 12, Harlan
-- Taylor Durham, 8, Kirksville, Mo.

Children selected to be honorary Kid Captains for away games are:
-- William Linder, 12, Johnston
-- Beckham Scadlock, 4, North Liberty
-- Brynn Carnahan, 5, Urbandale
-- Indya Sorrell, 10, Fulton, Ill.
-- Shelby Rogers, 16, Fort Madison
-- Ty Buffington, 5, Port Byron, Ill.

Home game Kid Captains will receive tickets and parking accommodations to attend a 2011 Iowa Hawkeye home football game. In addition, the Kid Captain will have pre-game access and photo opportunities and will be an honored guest at midfield before the game.

All Kid Captains, including the honorary away game captains, will receive a commemorative jersey and will have their individual stories highlighted throughout the football season. This year, all away game captains will also have the opportunity to attend the Iowa home game on September 17.
