July 23 Writing University stream features chicken stories

Susan Troller will read from her newly edited collection of chicken stories, "Cluck: From Jungle Fowl to City Chicks" at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 23, in a "Live from Prairie Lights" reading, streamed live on the University of Iowa's site.

The book is a funny, poignant, wry look at the backyard phenomenon of raising chickens for eggs, meat or pets. In addition to Troller's stories, the collection contains stories by Jane Hamilton, Michael Perry and Ben Logan and artwork by S.V. Medaris.

Troller got her first pet chicken as a birthday gift when she was eight and never looked back. Her interest in chickens really took wing when she was introduced to Consuela, the miraculous survivor of a mass gassing of laying hens at a factory farm and the star of the 2006 documentary film "Mad City Chickens: The Return of the Urban Backyard Chicken!"
Troller is an award-winning newspaper reporter for the Capital Times in Madison, Wis., where she has written about the thriving local food movement.
