UI offers assistance to Iowa Braille School following storm damage [Updated 4:35 p.m.]

University of Iowa Facilities Management is sending crews to help assess damage and determine if it can provide assistance to the Iowa Braille School, which was damaged by severe weather early Monday morning. UI workers are poised to provide power generators, electricians and ground crews to help clear storm debris and other assistance, if needed. UI Police also are lending assistance, helping secure the area overnight Monday.

There are no reports of injuries from the storm at the school, although its roof was reportedly damaged. [View photos of the generators being prepared, and of storm damage at the school, by clicking here.]

The Braille School -- a Board of Regents, State of Iowa institution located in Vinton-- houses and provides skill development, educational training and other services to students who are legally blind. The school was opened in 1852 as the Iowa College for the Blind. Mary Ingalls, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder (author of the "Little House on the Prairie" series), attended the school.


Campus Recreation and Wellness Center to host Speedo Champions Series swim meet July 21-24

The Iowa Flyers Swim Club and University of Iowa Recreational Services are hosting the 2011 Speedo Champions Series Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, July 24 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC).

This sectional-level swim meet is the first championship event that athletes can qualify for beyond their own state-level competition and most swimmer's first chance to experience major out-of-state championship competition. Athletes are primarily representing the states of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Lot 11 southeast of the CRWC will be used for meet parking July 21-24, when a special entry rate of $5 will be charged for all users.  UI Faculty/Staff can still use their parking permits for Lot 11 during this time. Additional parking for recreation users is available in the Court Street and Dubuque Street parking ramps and the Main Library lot.

The CRWC Natatorium will be closed starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20 through Sunday, July 24 as well as the Leisure Pool Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, July 24. For all closures, visit For more information see


University Club Newcomers' Group seeks new members, meets July 21
The Newcomers' Group of the University Club is seeking new members. The group will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at the Bread Garden Market, 226 S. Linn St. in the pedestrian mall in downtown Iowa CIty. Newcomers is open to all women new to the Iowa City area, as well as long-term residents new to the University Club.
The University Club mission is to promote interaction of women of all ages and affiliations who are interested in the University of Iowa and the surrounding Iowa City community. The newcomers' division of the University Club is open to all women in their first four years of residence in the Iowa City area. The monthly coffees, socials and programs offer an opportunity to make new friends and lasting friendships while learning about the Iowa City community.
