UI to host 2011 USA Winter Diving National Championships Jan. 30-Feb. 6
America’s best divers will compete in Iowa City during the 2011 USA Diving Winter National Championships Sunday, Jan. 30 to Sunday, Feb. 6 at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC).
The USA Diving Winter Nationals will be the first major diving event to be held at the new CRWC, and it will be the first time that USA Diving has ever held its national championships at the UI. It's also the first time since 1939 that a USA Diving national meet has been held in the state of Iowa.
"This event is a great way to highlight the new aquatic complex. We are excited about having the opportunity to host so many talented athletes and for them to demonstrate their talents in front of the university community," said Harry Ostrander, director of UI Recreational Services.
More than 125 of America’s top divers will be competing for 10 national titles, but more than national titles are at stake. The road to 2012 Olympic Games in London essentially starts in Iowa as the Winter Nationals will be the first phase in selecting the divers that will represent the United States in the individual events at this summer’s FINA World Aquatic Championships, which will be the first opportunity for countries to qualify for the Olympic Games in the diving events. The Winter Nationals are also an opportunity for divers to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in diving.
Divers will compete for national titles in the 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard, 10-meter platform, synchronized 3-meter springboard, and synchronized 10-meter platform events.
Nine members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Diving Team are expected to compete, including three-time Olympian and four-time world silver medalist Troy Dumais; world silver medalists David Boudia, Thomas Finchum, and Mary Beth Dunnichay; World Cup silver medalist Kelci Bryant; and national champions Christina Loukas and Chris Colwill.
Brittany Viola, a 2009 World Championships team member who is coached by former Iowa diver Randy Ableman, a 1980 Olympian and four-time Olympic coach, will also be at the Winter Nationals. In addition, a number of UI Hawkeye divers are slated to compete, including Deidre Freeman, Veronica Rydze and Arsen Sarkisian.
Tickets for the Winter Nationals will be available for sale at http://www.usadiving.org and on site at the CRWC by calling 319-335-9293. The ticket prices are as follows: $10/day for adults, $7/day for children 3-12 and UI students with ID, free for children under 3, $40 for an adult all-session pass and $30 for a child all-session pass.
