MEDIA ADVISORY: Experts available to speak about Mubarak's resignation, Egyptian political situation

The following University of Iowa experts are available to speak with members of the media about Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's resignation and the evolving political situation in Egypt:

Gail Buttorff is a doctoral student in political science at the UI, and an expert on authoritarian politics. Her scholarly work focuses on elections and political parties in the Middle East and North Africa, and she has conducted research in Jordan and Yemen. Her dissertation examines the relationship between regime legitimacy and opposition strategies in Jordan and Algeria. She can be reached at 253-212-6077 or

Hani Elkadi is a medical doctor, writer, artist and teacher who grew up in Egypt and originally came to Iowa to participate in the UI International Writing Program. After 10 years of teaching surgery and anatomy at the UI Carver College of Medicine, where he won Teacher of the Year in 1984-1985 and in 1986-1987, he went back to teaching art and writing medical books. He taught for many years at the Senior High Alternative Center and Elizabeth Tate High School in Iowa City, and he now teaches art at Kirkwood Community College. Phone: 319-325-1243.

Vicki Hesli is professor of political science in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She formerly served as director of the UI Middle East and Muslim World Studies scholarly group at UI International Programs. She is currently teaching a course titled "Introduction to Politics in the Muslim World." She has traveled to the Middle East to study political opposition organizations. Adrien Wing is a professor of law and expert on the Middle East who teaches a class at the UI titled “Law in the Muslim World.” She has visited Egypt frequently since the 1980s.
