Alumni couple commits $5 million to UI finance studies and football scholarships
University of Iowa finance students and Hawkeye football student-athletes will benefit from a $5 million estate gift commitment to the University of Iowa Foundation from UI graduates Curtis K. and Carol S. Lane of Omaha.
An estimated $1 million portion of the bequest from the Lanes will permanently endow the existing Curt and Carol Lane Faculty Fellowship Fund in the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business. That fund was created in 2003 by a previous gift from the Lanes; it supports a business faculty member who provides practical learning opportunities for UI finance students, such as applied investments.
The Curt and Carol Lane Finance Scholarship Fund will be endowed with $2 million of the bequest. This scholarship will be awarded to UI undergraduate finance majors, with preference given to military veterans with financial need who engaged in combat.
Selected Hawkeye football players will receive support from the Curt and Carol Lane Football Scholarship Fund, which will be endowed with approximately $2 million of the Lanes' gift commitment.
"Through this creative, forward-looking act of generosity, Curt and Carol Lane have assured that generations of faculty and students at Iowa will receive the support they both need and deserve," says UI President Sally Mason. "It is fitting that the Lanes, who have long been among the UI's most ardent fans, also number among its most effective champions."
Natives of Atlantic, Iowa, both Curt and Carol (Brindley) Lane are 1973 graduates of the University of Iowa. Curt received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance and insurance, and Carol received a Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics.
"Curt and Carol Lane are wonderful examples of people who lead by serving their community, their country, and their university," says UI Foundation President and CEO Lynette Marshall. "Their service has taken many forms, and this gift is just the latest example. We are deeply grateful."
A decorated Vietnam War veteran, Curt Lane also earned an MBA degree from the University of Nebraska. Co-founder of Concordant Partners, L.L.C., an Omaha-based hedge fund, he serves on the UI Foundation Board of Directors, and also on the Board of Visitors and the Finance Advisory Council at the UI Tippie College of Business. He also chairs the investment committee of the Iowa Scholarship Fund Board.
"Our fellowship in the business college supports a professor teaching a class that gives students a chance to actually experience the work of managing investments," Curt Lane says. "That's what students crave, and it's the kind of experience that can give UI graduates an edge in the job market."
Carol Lane says, "We both feel the University of Iowa gave us our chance to succeed. It was important to both of us, and our time here was a great start to our life together. Now with this gift we want to complete the circle.
"We never had children of our own," she adds. "We're as devoted to the success of UI students as if they were our own -- and the Hawkeye football players are definitely our boys."
The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the foundation, visit its website at http://www.uifoundation.org.
