Media Advisory: Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing 'white coat' ceremonies

WHAT: Ceremonies welcoming incoming University of Iowa medical, nursing and pharmacy students and their families


--UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, Macbride Hall Auditorium. UI President Sally Mason; Paul Rothman, M.D., dean of the college; and Christopher Cooper, M.D., associate dean for student affairs and curriculum, will give welcoming statements. Michael Cohen, M.D., UI professor and head of pathology, will give the keynote address. The medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats and recite the Oath of Hippocrates.

--UI College of Pharmacy Welcome to the Profession Ceremony: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Coralville. Speakers will be Renae Chestnut, associate dean for academic and students affairs, professor of pharmacy practice, Drake University, and immediate past president and current chair of the board of the Iowa Pharmacy Association; Michael Kelly, associate dean for academic affairs; Donald Letendre, dean of the college; Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Jordan Cohen.

--UI College of Nursing B.S.N. Beginnings event: 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, UI Medical Education and Research Facility Auditorium. Rita Frantz, the Kelting Dean and professor in the college, will address the students. Tom Rice, associate provost for faculty, also will offer remarks. The nursing students then will receive their white lab coats.
