University of Iowa News Release

April 28, 2011

Hancher's 2010-2011 season closes with Circa's '61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes' at Englert Theatre

The University of Iowa's Hancher will close its 2010-2011 season with a performance by Circa, a troupe committed to "circus without the boring bits." The ensemble will perform "61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes" at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

The performance will feature a dizzying array of circus stunts, all performed as a clock counts down and upbeat music encourages the performers to keep up.

Circa is this season's artist for Hancher's ongoing program known as Spot—The Hancher Family Arts Adventure. Each season, Hancher staff members select from applications from Iowa communities who would like to host the Spot artist. This year's community is McGregor, and the artists of Circa will present a series of free residency events in the community and then present a public performance. In Iowa City, the group will present workshops for students in Iowa City schools leading up to the final performance.

The performance is supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation. Spot—The Hancher Family Arts Adventure is supported by an endowment administered by Hancher. The program was originally supported by a grant from the Wallace Foundation.

Limited tickets remain for the May 14 performance and are available from the Hancher Box Office: $28/25; college student, $25.20/10; senior citizen, $25.20/22.50; youth, $10.

The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at the Englert Theatre.
