Middle Eastern Awareness Week features Dance of Arabia performance April 30
The University of Iowa Arab Students Association (ASA) will be hosting its first Middle Eastern Awareness Week from Sunday, April 24, through Saturday, April 30, culminating in a keynote event, Dance of Arabia 2011, at 7 p.m. April 30 at West High Auditorium, 2901 Melrose Ave., Iowa City.
Sa'id Music and Dance Company of Los Angeles, will present Arabic dance at the event, which will also include a folkloric fashion show.
Other events during Middle Eastern Awareness week include:
--"Midwest To Mideast: Healthcare During Conflict," 6-7 p.m. Monday, April 25, Indiana Room, Room 346, IMU, a panel discussion where three UI medical students discuss their experiences in Palestinian and Israeli hospitals.
--Film screening: "Budrus: It Takes a Village to Unite the Most Divided People on Earth," 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, Illinois Room, Room 348, IMU. See http://www.rocoeducational.com/BudrusFilm.php for more information on this film.
--"Salafi Transformations: The British Colony of Aden (Yemen) and the changing voices of Islamic religious reform in the Indian Ocean," a lecture by Scott Reese, a historian of Islamic Africa, 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.
--"Achieving Peace in Palestine," a presentation and discussion with John Dabeet, founder and president of Americans and Palestinians for Peace and a professor of Economics at Eastern Iowa Community College in Muscatine, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 28, Meeting Room A, Iowa City Public Library.
