Tippie students partner with Active Endeavors, Patagonia to raise money for Heritage Trust
Thanks to a partnership forged by a group of University of Iowa business students, shoppers can donate money to a local environmental group by purchasing T-shirts or Patagonia shoes from Iowa City clothier Active Endeavors.
Thanks to the partnership, the Johnson County Heritage Trust (JCHT) will receive $20 for the purchase of any pair of Patagonia shoes through Saturday, April 23, from Active Endeavors -- $10 from Patagonia, $10 from the store. In return, the Trust will give a complimentary, one-year membership to shoe buyers.
Active Endeavors is also selling for $20 a special, limited edition Earth Day T-shirt designed by students in the Tippie College of Business and made from organic materials. The store will donate $5 from every shirt sold to the JCHT.
The partnership is the brainchild of three Tippie College marketing students -— senior Giliann Chaikin, junior Laura Heineman and sophomore Amy Lovejoy.
"We started this project last year with Active Endeavors, when we sold organic T-shirts for Earth Day and it was so successful we looked at how we could expand it," said Chaikin, who is also a marketing intern at Active Endeavors. Last year's sale generated $500 in contributions to the Trust.
Patagonia came into this year's picture through a program the company offers with its retailers to provide financial support for environmental groups in communities where its products are sold. Chaikin said it also helped that Dave Collins, a marketing lecturer in the Tippie College of Business who is helping the students with the program, is a Patagonia fanatic.
Also on Saturday, April 9, a representative from Patagonia will be at Active Endeavors to take orders for shoe models that the store doesn't stock.
The Trust will use the proceeds to support local conservation efforts. This includes preserving nearby prairies, woodlands and wetlands for future generations. The organization currently maintains eight local natural areas and 11 conservation easements.
