UI vocal and theater student crowned Miss Iowa
UI sophomore vocal performance and theater student Jessica Pray was crowned Miss Iowa 2011 Saturday, June 11 at the Adler Theatre in Davenport.
Pray, a resident of Johnston and serving as Miss Muscatine, will begin a year of service continuing to promote her platform of "Saving Lives Through Blood Donation." She will also travel to Las Vegas in January to compete for the title of Miss America.
Pray, 18, is training in opera and classical voice, and her career ambition is to be a singer with an opera company. She performed "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess" in the talent portion of the Miss Iowa pageant.
This spring she had the understudy role to the lead of Adina in the Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater's spring production of "The Elixir of Love." Pray is also member of the international classical crossover trio MODA, formed by concert promoter Mel Bush.

June issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine digital-only, available to all
The award-winning Iowa Alumni Magazine is kicking off the summer with a fully redesigned June issue. This month's magazine is digital-only and has been opened up to everyone, not just University of Iowa Alumni Association members.
The online issue includes the stunning national park photography of alum Bruce Ellingson, the history of the UI's Scottish Highlanders, a feature on the Hawkeye athletes who made the Big Ten Icons list and much more.
IAM most recently won a gold award for best feature article in the national Circle of Excellence awards competition organized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The University of Iowa was one of five institutions nationally to receive a gold award. Iowa shares the top award with Auburn University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and Swarthmore College.

20th Annual BP Golf Tournament benefits Children's Miracle Network
The 20th Annual BP Golf Tournament at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville on June 6 raised $35,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to support pediatric patients and their families at University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City.
The 2011 fundraising effort contributed to the grand total of $760,000 that BP has donated to Children's Miracle Network from these golf tournaments over the past two decades.
Most recently, funds from this annual event helped with the renovation of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Patient Library. A donation from BP helped create a child friendly area equipped with an XBOX Kinect and space for story time.

Department of Neurology to host meetings for research volunteers June 23, July 14
Representatives from the Department of Neurology at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will hold informational meetings for potential research volunteers June 23 and July 14 at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. Both sessions will run from 7 to 8 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A, B and C.
At the Thursday, June 23, presentation "Decision-Making and the Brain: Information for Research Volunteers" graduate student Brad Thomas and research assistant Heather Robinson will define cognitive neuroscience and describe the ways they are exploring decision-making and the brain. They will tell how individuals with brain injuries can help scientists learn about the brain, cognition and behavior.
At the Thursday, July 14, event "Unlocking the Mind with Neuroscience" Iowa native Tara Fall will discuss how a stroke left her unable to recognize faces. Fall, a volunteer who is studied by UI neuroscientists, was profiled on NBC's Today show (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/42894691#42894691). After her talk, Thomas and Robinson will invite community members to participate in cognitive neuroscience research on individuals with brain injuries.
