Sept. 27, 2010

Alec Scranton named interim dean of UI College of Engineering

University of Iowa Provost Wallace Loh has appointed Alec Scranton, professor and associate dean of academic programs in the UI College of Engineering, as interim dean of the College of Engineering, effective Oct. 1.

As Scranton assumes his new post, College of Engineering Dean Barry Butler will begin his service as UI Interim Executive Vice President and Provost, also effective Oct. 1

A graduate of the College of Engineering, Scranton has served as associate dean since 2003, successfully leading the college's academic side through a multitude of initiatives, including completion of a critical ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accreditation review just a couple of years ago, major strides in K-12 outreach and engagement, and innovative living/learning programs. Previously, he served as departmental executive officer of the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

In addition, Scranton serves as University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and is a researcher at the UI Optical Science and Technology Center.

He is also director of the National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (NSF/IUCRC) Photopolymerization Center at the UI. The center represents a collaboration of scientists from the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado, as well as industrial representatives.

He received a Regents Award for Faculty Excellence in 2007.
