Local student participates in 2010 pollution prevention program
Nine University of Iowa College of Engineering students participated in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) 2010 Pollution Prevention Intern program. During the 12-week summer internships, students researched methods of reducing waste, conserving energy and preventing pollution at their host companies. In addition, the students examined the cost of their recommendations versus current practice and, in most cases, began implementing their programs.
Since its inception in 2001, the program's 232 interns have saved 140 companies more than $62.6 million by recommending projects that conserve resources and improve processes with dramatic environmental results.
The students and their host intern companies, listed by student hometowns, are:
BOONE: Brandon Goodman of Boone, a senior chemical engineering student, participated in a project to improve efficiency of and reduce energy use in wastewater treatment systems, as well as research the feasibility of alternative energy sources for Proctor and Gamble, Iowa City. (Brandon committed to a six-month project and will finish in November.)
CEDAR RAPIDS: Christopher Holmes of Cedar Rapids, a junior mechanical engineering student, participated in an optimization of compressed air system project at Pella Corporation, Pella.
DES MOINES: Ted Krausman of Des Moines, a senior mechanical engineering student, participated in a thermographic analysis of energy efficiency and heat recovery opportunities at Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids.
IOWA CITY: Thomas Fisher of Iowa City, a junior mechanical engineering student, participated in an energy reduction project at Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.
IOWA CITY: Hannah Fleck of Iowa City, an environmental engineering graduate teaching assistant, participated in a hazardous waste reduction project at Iowa Health System, Des Moines.
MUSCATINE: David Loos of Muscatine, a senior environmental engineering student, participated in a boiler efficiency project at Genesis Health System, Davenport.
SPENCER: Amber Johnson of Spencer, a senior chemical engineering student, participated in a water treatment and reduction project at Infastech, Decorah.
BUFFALO GROVE: Ian Stewart of Buffalo Grove, a senior environmental engineering student, participated in a solid waste reduction project at Cargill Inc., Sioux City.
DEKALB: Ethan Guio of Dekalb, a senior chemical engineering student, participated in a water reduction and wastewater diversion project at Farley's and Sathers Candy Company Inc., Creston.
