Hancher welcomes back Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company on Oct. 14

The Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company will blend the traditional with the contemporary when the group performs in Iowa City’s Englert Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The University of Iowa’s Hancher is presenting the company.

The Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company was founded in 1957 to promote awareness of Filipino cultural traditions through theatrical performances. The Bayanihan company—the name means “spirit of community”—presents Filipino folk dance spiced with Muslim and Hispanic influences. The performance will feature lively dancing accented by a wide array of colorful fabrics, headdresses, and ornaments.

The company was the first Filipino cultural group to perform in Russia and China, as well as in New York City’s Lincoln Center. Hancher has presented the company twice before, during the 1973-74 and 2006-07 seasons.

The event is supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets are $25/22; college student $22.50/10; senior citizen $22.50/19.80; youth $12.50/11 from the Hancher Box Office.

The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at the Englert Theatre.
