Hancher to present 'Leahy Family Christmas' at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort Dec. 4
The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present the “Leahy Family Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort’s Event Center. The concert will blend Celtic melodies with traditional Christmas carols.
“Leahy Family Christmas” is an all-ages show featuring the Leahy family, a group of eight brothers and sisters from Lakefield, Ontario, Canada, who have been playing, creating, and dancing together since childhood.
Despite privately releasing a few albums in the ‘80s, it was the Leahy family’s 1997 album, a self-titled instrumental work, that launched the family into star-status. Since then, the family members have been making headlines for their music, which they write, arrange and produce themselves. The Leahys have collected several awards, including Juno Awards for Best Country Group, Best Instrumental Album, and Best New Group. In addition, the musicians have been featured in a documentary, “The Leahys: Music Most of All,” which nabbed an Academy Award.
“A Leahy Family Christmas” will feature the Leahys performing classic Christmas tunes, original work, and other seasonal songs for an evening of all-ages fun. Audiences will also get to experience a small taste of what it was like to grow up in the Leahy household during the holiday season.
The Leahys will release their fifth album next year.
The concert is supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.
Tickets for the concert are $42/$37; college student $37.80/$10; senior citizen $37.80/$33.30; and youth $21/$17 from the Hancher Box Office.
The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
