Abbott funds State Hygienic Laboratory internship program
The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa announced today that it received a $50,000 award from The Abbott Fund to develop a national model for internships based on the laboratory's current student program.
"The Abbott Fund and the State Hygienic Lab share a commitment to increasing opportunities for students in laboratory science," said Christopher Atchison, director of the Hygienic Laboratory. "The generosity of Abbott will allow us to expand our current, successful internship program so that it can be adapted by other state laboratories, and thereby increase the number of opportunities exponentially."
Since the internship program began in 2007, the Hygienic Lab has hosted students from 11 universities and colleges in Iowa and two from universities outside the state. Scientific and administrative staff members at the laboratory mentor these scholars who are pursuing degrees in a variety of fields, including chemistry, biotechnology, biology, environmental studies, public health and journalism.
The internship program will be coordinated from the Hygienic Lab's "Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science," housed in its new building on the UI Research Park in Coralville. When completed, the center will include a fully functional learning laboratory, a conference center and a video classroom as part of the Iowa Communications Network.
The grant from the Abbott Fund was made through the UI Foundation, which the UI acknowledges as the preferred channel for gifts for all areas of the university.
Abbott is a member of the "Friends of the Center," an initiative to support scientific, educational and research programming at the State Hygienic Laboratory, Iowa's environmental and public health laboratory.
The Hygienic Laboratory is the state of Iowa's environmental and public health laboratory, with facilities located at the University of Iowa's Research Park campus in Coralville, at the Iowa Laboratories Facility in Ankeny and at Lakeside Lab in northwestern Iowa.
