Multi-faceted artist Bernstein will present Ida Beam free events

Poet, essayist, critic, multi-media artist and librettist Charles Bernstein will present a series of free events during his Ida Beam Visiting Professor residency at the University of Iowa Nov. 11-13.

The events include:

-- A free reading at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Dey House on the UI campus.
--A question-and-answer session at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12 in the Dey House.
--A public interview by cinema graduate students Andrew Ritchey and Richard Wiebe at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Dey House.
--A staged reading of his opera libretto "Shadowtime" at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in the Jerry Kollros Auditorium of Biology Building East.

Bernstein, who teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and directs the Electronic Poetry Center at SUNY-Buffalo, is prominent in the "language poetry" movement. He has written more than 30 books of poems, essays and opera libretti, and a volume of his selected poetry, "All the Whiskey in Heaven," was published this year.

He also portrayed Dr. Simon in the movie "Finding Forrester" and appeared in a series of Yellow Pages commercials with Jon Lovitz.
