Iowa's city managers to meet during tough times at UI conference

Last year, the theme of the Iowa Municipal Managers Institute was "Managing Under Pressure."

Not much has changed in the 12 months since, but they didn't want to use the same name two years in a row. So this year's institute -- to be held March 24-26 at the Iowa Memorial Union -- is called "Managing in Tough Times."

The institute, sponsored by the University of Iowa College of Law's Institute of Public Affairs (IPA), is an annual professional development conference for more city, town and county administrators. IPA director Jeff Schott said the institute is an example of the university providing a vital service to the state.

"Local government executives need an opportunity to develop their skills and perspectives and to learn about innovative methods and techniques, as well as build networks with other administrators," Schott said. "Through the past 22 years, we've developed the institute to where it's the foremost professional development conference for city managers and administrators not just in Iowa, but throughout the Upper Midwest."

More than 120 civic administrators are expected to trade notes at the conference and see how other towns and cities are dealing with the many problems they face. Workshops and seminars will be held on making "hard choices, all the time," "how to say what you don't want to say to people who don't want to hear it," and "evaluating police departments in tough times."

The conference will also look at current issues in municipal law, diversity and maintenance of ethical standards.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Iowa City/County Management Association and the Iowa League of Cities.
