Guitar-maker Creston Lea reads from debut collection July 14

Creston Lea will read from his debut collection of stories, "Wild Punch," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, in Prairie Lights, 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. The free event will be streamed live on the UI's Writing University website,

Set in northern New England, these stories portray the revelatory moments of small-timers, clergymen, hotheads, day laborers, motorcycle racers, loggers, horse farmers and young veterans of the Gulf War.

Lea's stories have appeared in DoubleTake, Open City, Hunger Mountain and W.W. Norton’s "25 and Under: Fiction." Visit his website at

Lea also has a custom guitar-building business, Creston Electric Instruments: Among other creations, he built a guitar incorporating a piece of sandstone, a steel plate and a carriage bolt from Woody Guthrie's childhood home in Oklahoma.
