UI professor named Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation Scholar

Fayyaz Sutterwala, M.D., Ph.D., faculty member in the UI Carver College of Medicine, has been named the 52nd Mallinckrodt Scholar by the Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation.

The honor is accompanied by a three-year, $210,000 grant that will be effective Oct. 1.

Sutterwala, who is an assistant professor of internal medicine in the UI Division of Infectious Diseases, will examine how the inflammasome, a key component of the innate immune system, controls how cancerous tumors progress and spread.

Mallinckrodt grants support highly promising young investigators. The foundation is particularly interested in funding basic research that has the potential to impact disease.
