UI Children's Hospital specialties ranked by U.S.News & World Report

Three specialty areas at University of Iowa Children's Hospital have been ranked in U.S.News & World Report's 2010-2011 edition of "America's Best Children's Hospitals."

The magazine ranked UI Children's Hospital 23rd in the nation in the specialty area of neonatology; 24th in orthopedics; and 25th in pulmonology.

The 2010-11 "Best Children's Hospitals" rankings are available online at They will be published in the August print issue of U.S.News & World Report, which will be available to subscribers as soon as July 15 and on newsstands starting July 27.

UI Children's Hospital is the only hospital in Iowa to be nationally ranked by U.S.News & World Report for children's care.

"This is well-deserved recognition for the physicians, nurses, and staff in these specialty areas," said Michael Artman (photo, left), M.D., physician-in-chief at UI Children's Hospital and professor and head of pediatrics at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. "This distinction underscores our continuing commitment to patients and their families -– that holds true for all primary and specialty care areas across UI Children's Hospital."

Neonatology refers to health care for newborn infants, especially critically ill, low birth weight and premature babies. Orthopedics focuses on care of the musculoskeletal system -- bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Pulmonology is the specialty dedicated to diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract.

At UI Children's Hospital, Jeffrey Segar, M.D., leads the Division of Neonatology, and Miles Weinberger, M.D., serves as director of the Division of Allergy and Pulmonology. Orthopedics care at UI Children's Hospital is provided in partnership with the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at UI Hospitals and Clinics under the direction of Stuart Weinstein, M.D., and Department Chairman Joseph Buckwalter, M.D.

The specialty rankings in "America's Best Children's Hospitals" are based on a methodology that weighs a combination of reputation, outcome and care-related measures. Details can be found online at
