Conference on health care reform, healthier workforce to be held Feb. 12

A conference exploring what small-business owners, executives and human resource professionals need to know about making employees healthier and how pending health care reform legislation could impact their organizations will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel.

Registration for "Understanding Healthcare Reform and Building a Healthier Workforce" can be made by calling Margaret Rios at 319-887-2251, ext. 301, by Feb. 8.

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack will deliver opening remarks and Mike Parkinson, M.D., former executive vice president with Lumenos and former associate director of medical programs and resources in the Office of the Surgeon General, will discuss the importance of building a healthier workforce, how it can be done, and how health-care reform will make it that much more important.

"Employee health programs have been recognized as important in prevention of adverse health effects, greater employee productivity and reduced health care costs," said James Merchant, University of Iowa professor of occupational and environmental health and director of the UI Healthier Workforce Center of Excellence. "Congressman Loebsack and Dr. Parkinson will provide insights into policy developments emerging in Washington, D.C., and nationally."

The conference fee is $40 per person for Corridor Business Journal subscribers and $60 per person for non-subscribers. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The conference is sponsored by the UI College of Public Health, Healthier Workforce Center for Excellence, the Corridor Business Journal, Mercy Cedar Rapids, and David P. Lind and Associates.
