Hancher presents 'super-hybrid monster music' of Abraham Inc. at IMU
Some musical collaborations can't easily be described. Such is the case with Abraham Inc., an upbeat and unusual ensemble featuring three stellar -- if disparate -- musicians. The University of Iowa's Hancher will present Abraham Inc. at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union on the UI campus.
David Krakauer is a brilliant classical and klezmer clarinetist who has performed at Hancher on numerous occasions. Fred Wesley is an extraordinary trombonist and the longtime musical director for James Brown. Socalled is a "beat architect" and the man who calls the music of Abraham Inc. "super-hybrid monster music."
The combination of klezmer, funk and hip-hop yields cross-cultural party music that has to be heard to be believed. The group's debut release, "Tweet Tweet," will be available on Feb. 23.
Krakauer, Wesley and Socalled adopted the name "Abraham Inc." in tribute to the Abraham who is revered by three of the world's major religions, underscoring their desire to create something new that is meaningful to all.
On Wednesday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. at Hillel House (corner of Dubuque and Market streets), the three will participate in a discussion about how they came together. The discussion, which will be free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the UI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Agudas Achim, and UI Hillel.
Discussion with the musicians will immediately follow the performance on March 4.
The performance and residency are supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation. Additional support comes from the F. Wendell Miller Fund.
Tickets for the March 4 general admission performance are $35; college student $10; senior citizen $31.50; youth $24.50 from the Hancher Box Office.
The Hancher Box Office, now located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Town Center near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at the Iowa Memorial Union.
