McCoy named UI Press director
After a national search, the Graduate College has named James A. McCoy the new director of the University of Iowa Press. He will begin his duties on Jan. 18.
McCoy has been with the UI Press for four years as assistant director and sales and marketing director. He also spent 10 years with the University of Chicago Press, where he was associate sales manager. Active in the community of university presses across the country, McCoy currently serves as chair of the marketing committee for the Association of American University Presses.
“This is an immense honor. The staff at the University of Iowa Press carry a deep respect for the written word; working with the press allows us, in some small way, to shape the future of the book,” McCoy said. “I believe that the University of Iowa Press has a unique opportunity to evolve as we move further into the twenty-first century.”
Graduate College Associate Dean Dan Berkowitz will continue as interim director until McCoy’s appointment begins.
“To date, the press has flourished as a result of Jim’s marketing and editorial decisions. His skills will help bring the Press to the broader community,” Berkowitz said.
Established in 1969, the UI Press is a well-regarded academic publisher serving scholars, students and readers throughout the world. As the only university press in the state, Iowa is also dedicated to preserving the literature, history, culture, wildlife and natural areas of the Midwest.
Like other university presses, the UI Press plays an important role in publishing scholarly and creative works that may not attract commercial attention. The press is a member of the Association of American University Presses and Green Press Initiative.
