Hancher gets funky with Papa Grows Funk Sept. 9 in IMU
Papa Grows Funk will perform at 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus. The event is the kickoff for Hancher’s 2010-2011 season.
Formed out of a jam session, Papa Grows Funk is now one of New Orleans' most successful funk bands. With an extensive tour schedule averaging 100 shows per year, Papa Grows Funk also stays close to its roots by showcasing its music every Monday night at the famous Maple Leaf Bar in downtown New Orleans.
With a lineup touting some of New Orleans' finest musicians, the band's blend of funk and soul has attracted a huge fan following, even without a major record label contract (though the band’s fifth album is due in late 2010).
The band's music -- featuring a blend of organ, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, and vocals -- has been noted for what the band’s website touts as "well-constructed, sophisticated, danceable jams" that hold true to the spirit of New Orleans.
IMU Catering will provide New Orleans-themed food for purchase. The menu includes Po' Boy sandwiches, andouille sausage sandwiches, almond cream-filled beignets, and a variety of drinks and chips.
The event is supported by the Hancher partners and gifts to Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation.
Tickets are $22; college student, $10; senior citizen, $22; youth, $10 -- available from the Hancher Box Office. This show is general admission with limited seating provided.
The Hancher Box Office, located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (319-335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at the Iowa Memorial Union near the Main Lounge.
