UI holds annual Welcome Week activities for students Aug. 21-28

The University of Iowa’s Welcome Week kicks off Saturday, Aug. 21, welcoming new and returning students to campus for the 2010-2011 academic year. The week continues through Saturday, Aug. 28 and will feature a variety of educational and social activities.

“Welcome Week is an outstanding opportunity for Hawkeyes to connect to each other, faculty, staff and the entire Iowa community,” said Tara L. Edberg, assistant director in the UI Office of Student Life.

The week starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 in Iowa Memorial Union for the Hawkeye Bash, where students can dance, have food, play casino games and see performances from several UI groups. There's also an after-hours shopping event Aug. 21 at Target in Coral Ridge Mall, available for first-year students. Rides will be provided from the IMU and residence halls starting at 10:30 p.m.

The Convocation Opening Ceremony is at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22 on the Pentacrest. UI President Sally Mason will officially welcome new students into the Hawkeye family before a first-year student gives an address on behalf of the class of 2014. The President's Block Party, which follows at 5 p.m., gives students an opportunity to learn about Iowa traditions like the “Iowa Fight Song,” eat free food and enjoy live entertainment by DJ Zato.

Aasif Mandvi (photo, left), correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” will give a talk on "The Real Behind the Fake News" for the third annual Cassandra S. Foens, M.D. Welcome Week Lecture, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 24 in the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City. In this speech, Mandvi will take the audience behind the scenes of the hit primetime news satire.

Students can also learn about campus groups and activities at the Student Organization and Fair, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 25 in Hubbard Park. The Student Job Fair, which is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 in the Main Lounge of the IMU, allows students to apply for on-campus employment.

Another Welcome Week activity is the Taste of Iowa City in downtown Iowa City from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. The UI, in conjunction with the Iowa City Downtown Association, is partnering with local restaurants to offer “taste portions” of their menus and a chance to experience downtown Iowa City shopping and music.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will present comedian David Koechner at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 in the Main Lounge of the IMU. Koechner has appeared in such movies as "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Get Smart.”

CAB will show an outdoor double feature starting at 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 with showings of "Shrek Forever After" and "Iron Man 2" at Hubbard Park. Saturday's events also include registration for community service activities in the Saturdays in Service program sponsored by Residence Life.

Many other activities are planned. See http://welcome.uiowa.edu for a complete schedule, or contact the Office of Student Life at 319-335-3059.
