AEGON Transamerica Foundation gives $1 million for UI business institute

The AEGON Transamerica Foundation has committed $1 million over the next two years to support the Emmett J. Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Iowa.

The gift, made through the UI Foundation, will create the AEGON Transamerica Fund for Excellence at the Vaughan Institute, which is part of the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business. The fund will provide for faculty development; research projects; support for student internships, scholarships, conference attendance and leadership development opportunities; and the institute's overall program excellence.

"Within its short history, the Vaughan Institute has provided students with career resources, mentoring programs, scholarships and linkages to industry for student internships and employment," said William C. (Curt) Hunter, dean of the Tippie College. "Thanks to AEGON's support, we will be able to expand upon and improve those programs."

Mark Mullin, president and CEO of AEGON USA LLC, said, "Managing risk is integral to the way we conduct business, and we are excited to support the Vaughan Institute's programs, which are so vital to the insurance industry."

The Vaughan Institute, named for longtime UI Professor Emmett J. Vaughan (who died in 2004), provides leadership and partnership with industry in key areas of risk management and insurance, including credit risk, enterprise risk management, corporate risk, catastrophic and technology risks, and cash management and financial risk management.

The AEGON Transamerica Foundation, established in 2004, supports nonprofit organizations that contribute to the well being of the communities in which the AEGON companies operate.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its website at
