MEDIA ADVISORY: Weber presents on IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering fish passage research contract April 26

EDITORS AND NEWS DIRECTORS: The information below tells of a Media Availability in which photographers and reporters will be able to visit scale models of two Columbia River hydroelectric dams involved in a $15 million IIHR contract.

WHAT: IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering (IIHR), a part of the University of Iowa College of Engineering, recently received a new five-year, $15 million contract from Public Utility District No. 2 of Grant County (Grant Co. PUD), in the state of Washington. The project involves finding ways for juvenile salmon on the Columbia River to successfully swim past the Priest Rapids and the Wanapum hydroelectric dams -- scale models of which are located in an IIHR laboratory. The models are: Priest Rapids Tailrace Model, scale of 1:64; Priest Rapids Bypass Model, scale of 1:20; and Wanapum Fish Bypass Model, scale of 1:24.

WHEN: 11 a.m. until noon Monday, April 26, 2010.

WHERE: James Street Laboratory, 2421 James St. #3, Coralville. The L-shaped building is located southeast of the IHOP Restaurant between the Comfort Suites and the UPS building.

WHO: Larry Weber, IIHR director and project leader, will deliver a brief presentation and answer questions along with other IIHR researchers.
