Combat Paper Project comes to the UI April 7-16

The Combat Paper Project (CPP), through which U.S. combat veterans reflect their experiences in papermaking workshops, will come to the University of Iowa Center for the Book April 7-16. Through the workshops the veterans transform the uniforms they wore in combat to create cathartic works of art, helping them reconcile their personal experiences while broadening the traditional narrative surrounding service, honor and the military culture.

Free events will give the public access to the residency. They are:

--A papermaking studio tour 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in Room 29, North Hall.
--A lecture and poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in Shambaugh Auditorium of the UI Main Library.
--An open house featuring the results of the workshops, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, in Room 29, North Hall.

North Hall, at the northern terminus of Madison Street, is accessible from both Madison Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway. Parking is available in the North Campus Ramp, adjacent to North Hall.

Drew Cameron, paper artist and U.S. veteran of the Iraq War, and papermaker and CPP artistic director Drew Matott will conduct free workshops for veterans interested in creating paper from their uniforms while engaging with fellow vets about their experiences. In addition, veteran Jon Turner and UI Nonfiction Writing Program alumnus Emma Rainey will join CPP for a writing workshop with vets.

The workshops will take place April 7 through April 10; veterans interested in these vets-only events should contact Drew Cameron directly at 802-316-1124 or info@combatpaper.

Book arts projects will be created as well from the paper and writing workshops, in collaboration with Center for the Book faculty and students.

The CPP is based at the Green Door Studio in Burlington, Vt., and has traveled throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, providing veterans' workshops, exhibitions, performances and artists' talks. This project is made possible by a multifaceted collaboration between artists, art collectors, academic institutions and combat veterans.
