Provost appoints Schnoor to head UI Water Sustainability Steering Committee

University of Iowa Provost Wallace D. Loh has appointed engineering professor Jerry Schnoor as director of the UI Water Sustainability Cluster Steering Committee, effective immediately.

The appointment is the first step in the university establishing its Water Sustainability Initiative, including 10 new faculty positions for interdisciplinary "cluster hiring" to advance research, education, and outreach on sustainability.

In his new position, Schnoor will help select members of the committee, which will include representatives from the Office of the Provost, Office of the Vice President for Research, and each participating college.

The committee is charged with coordinating the development of the initiative and the hiring of new faculty in the field of water sustainability.

Commenting on the appointment, Loh said: "Jerry Schnoor has the vision, energy and international reputation necessary to lead the UI Water Sustainability Initiative. In a time of fiscal constraint, this initiative represents a small but real commitment by the colleges and the university to interdisciplinary and focused excellence."

"This is a wonderful initiative by the university to expand our existing strength in interdisciplinary research on water including its availability, quality, reuse, health impacts, and its relationship to a changing climate," Schnoor said. "Economics, policy, and law as well as the natural sciences and engineering are all needed to solve the problems of water. These ten new faculty from various colleges will work together to create unique educational and research opportunities for students interested in a sustainable water future."

In June, Loh announced that a university-wide competitive award process had resulted in a winning proposal to create a faculty alliance on "water sustainability" in CLAS, Public Health, Law, Engineering, the Graduate College, and the Public Policy Center. Loh noted that 10 new hires will enhance the UI's existing faculty strengths and new campus assets including the $1.3 million Iowa Flood Center, the Office of Sustainability, and the undergraduate certificate in sustainability. The overall goal, he said, will be to galvanize an initiative for national excellence in an area of global importance: the quality, remediation, regulation and health impacts of water.

Schnoor, Allen S. Henry Chair in Engineering, professor of civil and environmental engineering and co-director of the UI Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research in the UI College of Engineering, currently chairs Gov. Chet Culver's Iowa Climate Change Advisory Council. He is internationally known for his leadership in environmental research and engineering education.
