Hancher presents Hot 8 Brass Band in free Homecoming Weekend performances

Hancher will contribute to the University of Iowa Homecoming Weekend festivities with free performances by the Hot 8 Brass Band. The band will take to the downtown Iowa City streets as part of the Homecoming Parade at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, and then entertain from the UI Pentacrest stage in a free performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. Audience members are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the Sunday afternoon concert.

The members of the Hot 8 Brass Band know a thing or two about rising water. As a result, they are the perfect musicians to lead a celebration as Iowa City and the surrounding region continue to recover from the devastating flood of 2008. The band was an integral part of grassroots recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, sharing joyful music to uplift spirits during that challenging time. The group's music was featured in Spike Lee's documentary "When the Levees Broke."

The members of the Hot 8 Brass Band were born and raised in New Orleans and many of them have been playing together since high school. Their energetic, funky sound has been a highlight of Second Line parades in the Crescent City for over a decade. The band performs annually at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and tours around the country and the world.
