UI pharmacy graduate establishes pharmaceutics professorship

Through a $750,000 gift from Nagesh Palepu, a University of Iowa graduate and entrepreneur, the UI College of Pharmacy will benefit from a new endowed professorship in the area of pharmaceutics, the science of preparing and dispensing drug products.

The Palepu-Flanagan Professorship in Physical Pharmacy will support a UI leader in pharmaceutics and also will enhance the college's academic and research contributions to the field.

Palepu, of Southampton, Penn., and Hyderabad, India, received his Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutics from the UI in 1984. He made the gift through the UI Foundation and in honor of his former UI pharmacy professor and mentor, Douglas Flanagan, who has taught in the college's Division of Pharmaceutics since 1978.

"I learned so much from Professor Flanagan during my time at the University of Iowa, and I owe my success to him," Palepu said. "I hope this professorship not only will enhance the college's excellence in pharmaceutics education and research, but also will inspire new generations of pharmaceutics students."

Palepu is the owner, president and chief scientific officer of SciDose, LLC, in Southampton, Penn., and of TherDose Pharma Pvt., Ltd., in Hyderabad, India. Both companies are involved with dosage form design.

"This very generous gift from this very successful graduate will help us advance the practice and discipline of physical pharmacy, providing students with a comprehensive, world-class program in the field," said Donald E. Letendre, dean of the UI College of Pharmacy. "It also will benefit the industry as a whole by motivating UI pharmacy students to pursue physical pharmacy as a specialty of choice."

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is ranked 17th in the nation by U.S.News & World Report and has a long history of excellence in the multidisciplinary science of developing, producing and characterizing dosage forms. The college is home to the largest and most experienced university-affiliated, FDA-registered pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the United States, and its Division of Pharmaceutics provides highly regarded teaching and research in the field.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its Web site at http://www.uifoundation.org/.
