State Farm grant renewed to help develop Career Leadership Program

The University of Iowa's Pomerantz Career Center has received a $50,000 grant from State Farm Insurance for a second year to develop programs in its Career Leadership Academy.

The Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant will help provide UI students with a chance to explore personal leadership styles and develop employment skills in a variety of exciting settings.

The grant, which was made through the UI Foundation, also will assist with student materials, networking events, teambuilding workshops, a mentoring program, etiquette dinners, service learning projects, career search tools and funding for selected students to attend a national leadership conference.

As part of the grant presentation, Terry Barton, State Farm's vice president for Iowa, will meet with Career Leadership Academy participants Sunday, Oct. 4.

"State Farm recognizes the value of higher education and the importance of preparing future leaders," Barton said. "For those reasons, we are delighted to support the Career Leadership Academy."

The Career Leadership Academy is a four-semester academic program in the Pomerantz Career Center that helps participating UI undergraduates develop their leadership skills. The program helps students become self-aware as leaders, and to become leaders who understand others, who can interact with others and engage the world. There are currently more than 400 students involved with the initiative.

The program was designed in response to employer needs and helps students develop employment skills through a series of academic classes and community service projects.

Pomerantz Career Center provides services to students and alumni from the UI. Services available include career and major exploration; assessment tools; career advising; and job and internship search resources such as UI Employment Expo, an online recruiting system. The Pomerantz Career Center hosts several career fairs annually, career education programs for students, mock interviews and many other programs and services. The office is located at C310 Pomerantz Center, on Market Street and the Cleary Walkway in Iowa City.  For more information, call 319-335-1023 or visit
