Hancher presents Merlin International Magician of the Year winner Rob Lake

lakeIn 2008 at age 25, Rob Lake became the youngest person ever to win the Merlin International Magician of the Year Award, his craft's highest honor. Hancher will present Lake in "An Afternoon of Magic" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. The performance will be held in City High School's Opstad Auditorium.

Lake, who hails from Oklahoma and has been called "the hero of magic" by David Copperfield, first became enraptured with magic as a 10-year-old. On a family trip, Lake saw Kirby VanBurch perform in Branson, Mo. VanBurch became Lake's mentor and is now the executive producer of Rob Lake Magic.

After several years of performing at local school, civic, and church events, Lake got his first big break at age 16 when he was named "America's Greatest Young Magician" by Fox Family Channel.

In addition to his stage show, Lake is in demand as a designer of illusions for other magicians and for numerous theatrical productions, including over 100 productions of the Broadway musical Disney's Beauty & the Beast.

Tickets for Lake's October 18 performance are $25/20; UI student $22.50/10; senior citizen $22.50/18; youth $12.50/10 from the Hancher Box Office.

The Hancher Box Office, now located on the first floor of the south end of the Old Capitol Mall near the parking ramp, is open for phone (335-1160 or 800-HANCHER) or walk-up business from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Tickets may be ordered online at http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available for sale one hour before show time at City High.
