UI Dance Forum and Youth Ballet will perform 'Sleeping Beauty' excerpts
The University of Iowa Dance Forum and Youth Ballet will feature excerpts from the classical ballet "Sleeping Beauty" in performances at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 24, in the Space Place Theatre of UI North Hall.
The UI Youth Ballet's "Sleeping Beauty" excerpts will include the fairies of Tenderness, Eloquence, Generosity, Song, and Passion, who give gifts to the baby Aurora and their queen the Lilac Fairy; fairy-tale characters including Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, Puss and Boots and the White Cat, which the Jewel Fairies present at princess Aurora's wedding; and Aurora herself.
Upper-level Youth Ballet dancers have been working on theses historic excerpts since January, under the direction of Artistic Coordinator Eleanor Goudie-Averill, who has also restaged the renowned Bluebird Pas De Duex for two UI dance majors.
The program will also feature more than 30 dancers under the age of 10, performing choreography by Dance Forum Director Kathryn Smith and Lydia Phillips.
Dance Forum's jazz students will open the program with a new piece by Sara Koslowski, which will be followed by live piano music by Dance Forum's accompanists Katie Fang (Saturday) and Eben Seaman (Sunday).
Admission will be $12; UI students, senior citizens and youth $6.
Tickets may be purchased in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union through May 15 only. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In addition to cash and checks, the University Box Office accepts MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover cards.
Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the door, by cash or check only; no credit cards.
North Hall, which is accessible on foot from the Anne Cleary Walkway, is across the pedestrian bridge from free parking in the Hancher lot, and parking is also available right next door in the North Campus ramp at the north end of Madison St.
The Youth Ballet and Dance Forum are community education and outreach programs of the UI Department of Dance.. The Youth Ballet School offers a full schedule of classes throughout the school year and a summer session.
