UI America Reads hosts 12th annual year end celebration May 8
University of Iowa America Reads will host its 12th annual year-end celebration from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 8 at Roosevelt Elementary School in Iowa City.
UI America Reads was created in 1997 in response to then-President Bill Clinton's mandate that all children read well by the completion of third grade. UI America Reads is one of the few that has a highly prescribed plan based on years of research from the UI's Summer Reading Clinic, according to Joy Harrington, program coordinator.
UI America Reads hires up to 50 work study students from all fields of study at the university. Tutors must complete 20 hours of training in the teaching of reading and then attend weekly workshops before they can be hired. This year, there are 44 UI tutors, of which 15 are education majors.
Every tutor travels to one of six Iowa City Community School District schools and provides 30-minute one-on-one reading tutorials for children. Tutors work with the same children two to three days each week and write lesson plans for each child every day they tutor. The service is provided free to the school district.
