MEDIA ADVISORY: UI, Iowa City to hold alcohol summit Friday

WHAT: The Partnership for Alcohol Safety, a new alliance forged by the University of Iowa and the City of Iowa City to address excessive alcohol drinking among UI students, is holding a summit. Community members and others will learn more about the problems associated with excessive drinking, identify collective objectives for addressing it, and establish priorities and action steps for the partnership's steering committee.

WHO: More than 70 community representatives have been invited to take part in the Partnership for Alcohol Safety Summit, including city and university officials, downtown and other local business owners, community organization representatives, members of the medical community, law enforcement officials and students. The summit's moderator will be Kenneth G. Brown, Ph.D., associate professor and Henry B. Tippie Research Fellow in the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business.

WHEN: 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, March 27.

1-1:15 p.m.      Welcome and personal introductions

1:15-1:30 p.m. Overview of problem

1:30-2 p.m.     Small group break out (objectives/metrics)

2-2:25 p.m.     Large group discussion

2:25-2:35 p.m. Break

2:35-3:05 p.m. Small group break out (barriers/tactics on select objectives)

3:05-3:35 p.m. Large group discussion

3:35-4 p.m.      Wrap up, next steps, and evaluation

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Media are welcome to cover the summit. However, much of the discussion will take place in small groups and reporters are asked to refrain from conducting interviews while the summit is in session. A short break is scheduled at about 2:25 p.m. Reporters may also interview willing participants when the summit concludes.
