Pohaku marketing firm is newest tenant at UI Technology Innovation Center

Pohaku Inc., a marketing services firm, has located an office at the Technology Innovation Center business incubator in the University of Iowa Research Park. Pohaku uses its technological expertise to help clients increase sales and increase savings through effective solutions in event strategy, relationship marketing, and Web applications.

The six-year-old firm, headquartered in Washington, Iowa, added the Coralville office as a way to strengthen its presence in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids technology corridor. The 16 tenants of the Technology Innovation Center and BioVentures Center business incubators include engineering, computer science, and biotech start-ups, but Pohaku is the sole marketing firm in the park.

"We were attracted to this atmosphere of learning, innovation and research fostered by the University of Iowa, and this was something we wanted to be a part of. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the UI and other tenants on the park and people and absorb their knowledge on a daily basis," said Barrett Gady, chief operations officer at Pohaku.

Pohaku is currently expanding its staff in sales and database design. "We are looking for those who are cross-functional and understand technical, data-driven solutions and have excellent consultative skills," Gady said, adding that the proximity to the UI and a ready pool of marketing talent was another reason for his company to locate in the Technology Innovation Center.

More companies are devoting their advertising budgets to direct response marketing, so Pohaku is focusing its efforts and is hiring in this area, Gady explained. It is seeking Web developers, which are needed to develop the necessary technology in this type of marketing, such as customized applications that allow companies to analyze data.

Pohaku was formed in 2003 as a marketing firm whose goal is to bring buyers and sellers together through relationship marketing, Web applications and event strategy. Additionally, Pohaku has been nationally certified for five years as a Women's Business Enterprise, one of only eight in Iowa. Its clients include companies in the financial, insurance, agriculture and education industries. For more information about Pohaku visit http://www.gopohaku.com/.

Pohaku is the 96th company to enter the Technology Innovation Center business incubation program, established in 1984. It is located in Suite 111 of the Technology Innovation Center.

The UI Technology Innovation Center is one of six centers of the IOWA Centers for Enterprise, which integrates existing economic development activities at the UI, offers a comprehensive program that promotes economic development and technology transfer, provides assistance to Iowa startups and existing Iowa businesses and communities, and helps the state of Iowa develop a creative, entrepreneurial workforce. IOWA Centers for Enterprise optimizes the flow of university intellectual property into opportunities for licensing, commercialization and business development.
