Cedar Rapids girl honored as Children's Miracle Network Champion

Iowa's 2009 Children's Miracle Network Champion will receive a special send-off and a $500 shopping spree at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at the Walmart store located on 29th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids.

Sierra Manning, a patient from University of Iowa Children's Hospital, will represent all Iowa children who have faced serious medical challenges during the Children's Miracle Network "2009 Champions Across America" program, presented by Walmart.

Sierra, 9, has an inoperable brain tumor on her brain stem and has received advanced treatments since February 2006.

Beginning March 18, Sierra and her parents will join 49 other Champions in Orlando, Fla. The children will serve as ambassadors for millions of their hospitalized peers.

Singer-songwriter Anya Marina on Iowa Public Radio's 'Java Blend' March 13

San Diego-based singer-songwriter Anya Marina will perform live as part of the Iowa Public Radio performance series "Java Blend" at noon Friday, March 13, at Iowa City's downtown Java House.

Marina will bring alternative acoustic sound to the Java House stage, performing songs from her new CD is titled "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II." Her music has been featured on the ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and MTV's "The Real World."

Broadcasts for this performance will be on Saturday, Mar. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 29 on Iowa Public Radio.
