Summer Undergraduate Research Conference set for Thursday
Nearly 150 of the University of Iowa's most talented undergraduate researchers will showcase their work Thursday, July 30, at the fourth annual UI Summer Undergraduate Research Conference.
The conference, sponsored by the UI Graduate College, will run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union's Main Lounge. The event is open to the public.
The conference is a culmination of the students' summer undergraduate research experiences at the UI. Because participants present their work to the university research community, the event serves as an important professional development opportunity for students.
One-third of the students are participants in the Graduate College's Summer Research Opportunity/McNair Scholars Program, partially supported by the U.S. Department of Education. Other summer undergraduate researchers are sponsored by several university departments and programs, with additional funding provided by the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
Students in these UI summer research programs work directly with faculty mentors. The research programs help the university recruit talented students, many of whom may choose to continue their work at the UI as graduate scholars.
Portions of North Campus Ramp pedestrian access closed July 31 to Aug. 3
The elevator, southwest stairwell and upper pedestrian bridge of the University of Iowa's North Campus Ramp will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday, July 31 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3 so work crews can apply a waterproofing membrane to the structure.
The northeast stairwell will remain open, as will the exterior staircase that goes from the lower level, by the elevator tower, directly up to Cleary Walkway.
Anyone requiring an elevator to access Cleary Walkway, or the surrounding buildings, should park in the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) Parking Ramp and take the elevator to the fourth floor. UI parking permits for the North Campus Ramp will be honored in the IMU Ramp for the duration of the closure.
Symposium will highlight FUTURE fellows' research July 31
The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine will host a public symposium from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, July 31, in the Kelch Conference Room (Room 1289) of the Carver Biomedical Research Building. The symposium will highlight the scientific findings of seven professors from undergraduate colleges around Iowa who conducted research at the UI this summer.
The professors are the inaugural faculty fellows of the FUTURE (Fostering Undergraduate Talent - Uniting Research and Education) in Biomedicine Program, an initiative aimed at building a network of scientists and science educators to benefit undergraduate science education and strengthen biomedical research in Iowa.
In addition, five students from the undergraduate colleges, who also participated in the program, will present posters of their work.
