UI researcher receives Muscular Dystrophy Association grant
Aaron Beedle, Ph.D., an associate in molecular physiology and biophysics at the UI Carver College of Medicine, has received a two-year, $120,000 grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to study muscular dystrophies caused by abnormalities in a protein called dystroglycan.
Several different genetic mutations can disrupt dystroglycan function and cause muscular dystrophy. However, disease onset and severity varies greatly among patients.
Beedle will examine how the timing of dystroglycan disruption during muscle development increases or decreases the severity of muscle disease. The study will also investigate whether restoring normal dystroglycan can lessen or prevent muscle damage in mice.
Beedle works in the lab of Kevin Campbell, Ph.D., UI professor and head of molecular physiology and biophysics and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.
