MEDIA ADVISORY: Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing 'white coat' ceremonies

WHAT: Ceremonies welcoming incoming University of Iowa medical, nursing and pharmacy students and their families

WHEN/WHERE/DETAILS:
-- UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, Macbride Hall Auditorium. UI Provost Wallace Loh and Paul Rothman, M.D., dean of the college, will give welcoming statements. Richard Williams, M.D., professor and head of the UI Department of Urology, will give the keynote address. The medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats and recite the Oath of Hippocrates.

-- UI College of Pharmacy Welcome to the Profession Ceremony: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Coralville. Speakers will be Bill Baer, a 1976 UI pharmacy graduate, director of the Pharmacy Department at Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa, and chair of the board of the Iowa Pharmacy Association; Michael Kelly, associate dean for academic affairs; Donald Letendre, dean of the college; and UI Provost Wallace Loh.

-- UI College of Nursing B.S.N. Beginnings event: 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, UI Medical Education and Research Facility Auditorium. Rita Frantz, the Kelting Dean and professor in the college, will address the students. UI Provost Wallace Loh and Kathleen Hanson, the college's associate dean for academic affairs, also will offer remarks. The nursing students then will receive their white lab coats.
