First-year law students to participate in community service activities

Incoming first-year students at the University of Iowa College of Law will participate in an afternoon of community service activities next week as part of their weeklong orientation process.

The community engagement activities will be held the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 18 for numerous Johnson County non-profit community development agencies. Projects this year include cleaning the Englert Theater, conducting maintenance at the Ronald McDonald House and cleaning and straightening books at the Iowa City Public Library.

Linda McGuire, the law school's associate dean for civic engagement, said the service project is an annual part of each incoming class's orientation. Other orientation sessions held during the week for the approximately 200 first-years include a class that introduces the law and legal reasoning, commentary on legal careers from alumni who are practicing attorneys, judges and justices, and the nuts and bolts of the law school's operation. Orientation begins on Sunday, Aug. 16.

McGuire said the community service project not only introduces students to the area and provides bodies to help local charitable organizations but also shows students the importance of providing leadership and community service in their professional, post-law school lives.

She said this is the third year the community service activities have been a part of the orientation program.

Students will begin their projects between noon and 12:30 p.m. This year's engagement projects the law students will participate in include:

--Englert Theater: cleaning the building's interior.
--Hickory Hill Park: trail maintenance.
--Iowa City Public Library: collection maintenance, dust shelves and straighten books.
--Whispering Meadows Wetland Park: wetlands prairie restoration.
--Johnson County Public Health Department: sterilizing toys, assembling information brochures for maternity program and other projects.
